Scottish Artist Dominic McIvor, winner of the Contemporary Arts Trust Award 2017. Also awarded a place at the coveted New York Studio School to study a Masters in Fine Art.

I am a 2014 graduate of Gray’s School of Art. Making a living as an artist is no easy ride and I thank you for stopping by my website in support of my work.

My studio work has developed out of an interest that started in my 3rd year at university with the idea of endurance. I noticed that a rhythmic, numerical instructed working method rather than my previous representational approach was producing much more interesting surfaces due to the imperfections created by human error. It was these blemishes that stood out and encouraged me to explore the spontaneous and to exploit the imperfections through drawing.

The role of controlled chance within my art practice has been instrumental in bringing my natural responsive accidents into art making and recording the ongoing process on the maquette surface using drawing as a tool. In terms of material, I use plaster to manipulate, the aim being to explore the vulnerability, mass and materiality of the model and exploit the inconsistency from the human hand. I am then able to combine a rigid rule making, labour intensive, strategies to the drawings and displaying the steps taken, and the mishaps that have occurred in the models.

The combination between model making and drawing in my recent practice has enabled me to explore countless possibilities.

I am now a Technician and Tutor Support at the Edinburgh Leith School of Art, as well as continuing to create and develop new artworks from my studio in Edinburgh. You can read more about media and industry reviews of my work here.

I have been awarded a place at the New York Studio School to study a Masters in Fine Art starting in September 2018 for a two year course and am currently fundraising to secure this opportunity. This exciting next step will be a challenging platform to develop my own artistic practice and fly the flag for contemporary young Scottish Artists. Without sponsorship I may have to decline this opportunity. If you feel that you could help please contact me.
